The indispensable role of bees in the cider orchard
Bees, Normandy honey, cider orchards
At Maison Drouin, nature is at the heart of our expertise. Our cider orchards, home to 35 varieties of apple trees - divided between bitter, bittersweet, sweet and tart apples - owe their vitality to a fragile but harmonious balance.
Bees:
the architects of pollinationPollination is a crucial stage in the process of turning the flowers of our apple trees into fruit. When bees pollinate, they transfer pollen from the anthers (the male part of the flower) to the pistil (the female part), enabling fertilisation to take place. Cross-pollination is essential in the cider orchard, as most apple varieties cannot pollinate themselves. This means that it is essential to have several varieties planted together to ensure effective fertilisation. Bees play a crucial role in this process, carrying pollen from tree to tree. To ensure this natural pollination, we keep our own beehives on the estate. By looking after our bees, we support biodiversity and the production of our orchards.
A sustainable, virtuous ecosystem
The cider orchard is a model of sustainable agriculture. Not only does it encourage biodiversity thanks to its different varieties of apples, but it also acts as a carbon sink. In fact, each bottle of calvados we produce helps to absorb 2.9 kg of CO2, a tangible benefit for the environment.Apples with unique flavours
The varieties of apples we grow are the basis of our exceptional calvados.
Bitter and bittersweet apples provide structure and complexity.Sweet apples offer roundness and natural sweetness. Each variety is essential to creating harmonious blends that are typical of our terroir.A commitment to the future
Taking care of our bees, protecting our orchard and preserving the environment are fundamental commitments for our company. Together, these efforts not only ensure the quality of our calvados, but are also a commitment to future generations. When you savour a glass of Drouin calvados, you are supporting a harmonious, sustainable and virtuous ecosystem. The work of bees is precious. We have always been committed to fulfilling our mission of promoting nature and the Normandy region.
