The imprisoned apple
Presentation
Growing apples in carafes: an unusual pastime shared
by the Drouin and Alleaume families - amusing and tasty!
Every year in the spring the Alleaumes, apple-growers, hang between
10,000 and 20,000 carafes in the trees of their orchards near Gonnevillesur-Honfleur.
Four or five months later the carafes containing ripe apples
are taken down, washed, and filled with calvados by the Drouin family. The
flavours of fruit mingle with those of the spirit to produce the most fruity of
all calvados. Despite more than 30 years of experience only 40% on average
of the carafes hung up are fit for sale.
«The first year our success rate was only 5%!
t wasn't 0%, so we decided to persevere.»
Christian Drouin
